Soccer Alumni Games

The Baker men and women’s team recently had an alumni game that took place in Liston Stadium. One thing I love about watching and participating in alumni games, is that these youthful and active college-athletes get to take on a bunch of has-been’s and let it go one of two ways. They either get schooled by the older, but wiser alum, or they walk all over the older, and out of shape alum. For the women, it was more of a giggle and push around session. They fought hard, but you can tell they were all out there just having fun. But during the men’s game, they were out for blood. There was yelling, pushing, arguing, and all, you would think this game was going on some phantom record book that follows you for life. Men tend to be much more competitive, and this past Saturday proved that. Coach Houser and asst. Coach Davy even had the chance to partake in the games by playing and refereeing.

Senior Night

This past saturday was senior night for the men’s and women’s basketball teams. For us, it was do or die. This game would solidify our playoff spot and we knew it was going to come down to the wire. We fought and battled and the game was close the whole way until about 5 minutes left in the second half. Both teams played hard and it was such a fun and thrilling game to be a part of. It was also nice to come out on top. Below are some pictures before and after the game.

Wildcat Wins!

The only thing better than getting an extra hour of sleep Saturday night was the Baker teams that came out on top this weekend. Baker men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, cross country, football, and wrestling were all victorious this weekend!

The Baker men have been the buzz of town as they’ve been featured on ESPN’s blog, the front page of Yahoo, and various other news sources like Lawrence Journal World. Sam Kenney, a sophomore guard from Manhattan, Kan., is the one who hit the miraculous, half-court buzzer beater. If there is anyone who deserved to make a shot like this, it’s him. There isn’t anyone more humble and team-oriented than this guy and he’s single-handedly won the respect of thousands, as the viral video has received over half a million views on YouTube and counting. The mens team also posted a 63-59 win over Tabor College on Friday night.

The Baker women’s volleyball team, a No. 6 seed in the HAAC Playoffs upset No. 3 William Jewell College 3-2 on Saturday evening.
Offensively, sophomore Savannah Smith led the way recording 21 kills, while Brooke Allen anchored the defense with 52 digs.

Led by freshman Lauren Jaqua, Baker University placed seven runners in the top 20 and captured the Heart of America Athletic Conference women’s cross country championship on Saturday at the Baldwin City Golf Course. With the team title, the Wildcats qualified for the NAIA national meet on Nov. 20 in Vancouver, Wash. The Wildcats finished with 33 points to edge William Jewell, the team runner-up with 44 points.

The women’s basketball team traveled to Oklahoma to play in the Northwestern Oklahoma State Tournament in which we won the tournament and now hold a record of 2-0, just like the men. Our next game will be this Wednesday where we travel to Friends University along with the men’s team.

The Baker football team went out with a bang on their Senior day and last home game of the season. They beat Evangel 41-6 and was led defensively by Colton Miller’s seven tackles, two interceptions and two pass break-ups.

The Baker wrestling had a pretty busy weekend as they hosted two big events. They wrestled past Calumet College posing a 41-9 score and below is the scenery I experienced on Sunday morning.

It’s a great time to be a Wildcat. Come out and continue the support for the Wildcats as the playoff run continues with the fall season sports. Women’s soccer hosts
Lindenwood University tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at Liston Stadium. The men’s soccer team also hosts Benedictine College on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Liston Stadium, as well. And the Baker Volleyball team travels to Lindenwood on Wednesday for the 2nd round of conference playoffs.

Go BU!

Racquetball

An example of a racquetball court.

For the less-than-athletic folks (like me), the term “racquetball” is scary. Especially after you break it down into “racquet” and “ball.” Double the scare. If you are unfamiliar with this game, it involves sticking two to four people, all wielding blue, yellow, or green racquets, into a solid white, completely enclosed room, with one small, rubber ball. The point is to hit this ball off of the front wall with as much force as possible so that it will rocket back to the other players and one of them can hit it. At this point, the racquet becomes more of a shield than anything else.

But despite my lack of coordination and arm muscles, I have discovered that this is actually a great game. It is very easy to learn, it’s a LOT of fun, and it’s a great work out. It does require a lot of running around, but only for short distances. I have been playing three to four times each week, usually for about an hour and a half. Now I don’t feel as guilty when I indulge in Sonic’s chocolate shakes. 🙂

So if you need another PE credit or just have some extra time, I highly recommend racquetball for everyone.
