Chris Smith’s Profile

It would appear I just can’t get enough of Baker University.

I transferred to Ole’ BU four years ago after one gloomy semester at Missouri Southern State in Joplin, Mo. Not to knock the Lions, I’m sure their institution has some truly endearing qualities — I just never found them.

Suffice it to say, the move was for the best. It would be a disservice to call my four years at Baker simply memorable. During my time here I have had the privilege of playing soccer for the No. 6 team in the country, served as editor-in chief of an All-Kansas collegiate publication, and have developed friendships with a group of men that will undoubtedly be in my wedding — should any hopelessly misguided woman choose to have me for the next several decades.

Now is probably the time to acknowledge that it almost never happened. When I was recruited by Baker during my senior year I figured the institution to have a case of the “toos.” It was too small (My high school was more populated). Too close to home (Home is Overland Park, Kan.). Too conservative. Too much, well, not what I was looking for.

Then I met Terri Blake and the rest of the accommodating Baker admissions staff and began to fall in love with the campus. I realized “small” was actually just right. Close to home didn’t mean my parents had a key to my dorm and the politics of the university still had that “collegey” feel.

After graduation in December — through some wonderfully paradoxical situation where the editor of the school paper develops a cooperative friendship with the Baker higher-ups — I was hired as a contract marketer. It’s been two weeks on the job and I can safely say I love working for this school almost as much as I loved being educated by it.

So I look forward to continuing to provide you “prospectives” some insight along with the other well-versed BakerU Bloggers for the next few months. Speak to you soon.
